When To Get Your Quilt Appraised
-
Insurance replacement in case of fire, damage or theft. Note: this means
newly made quilts
as well as antique, made before 1900, and vintage, made from 1900-1970. (Check with your agent as to the coverage you’ll need.)
-
For donation purposes. If the value is over $500.00 you must have a written appraisal by a qualified appraiser. (Check with your tax preparer.)
-
To settle an estate upon the death of the quilt owner.
-
To establish the value of an estate in a divorce situation.
-
If you are shipping a quilt. (Never put the word,
“quilt”
on a package you are shipping as it will disappear. Write or indicate “fabric” or “household goods.”)
-
When you are “gifting” someone with a quilt on a special occasion you will find an appraisal a valuable addition. (Folks are amazed you can make something valuable!)
-
When your quilt is hanging in a show, exhibition or on display.
-
To determine Fair Market Value for sales purpose.
-
Curiosity! Yes, sometimes you may just want to know the quilt pattern, date and other information an appraiser can tell you about your quilt.
PS. Don’t forget to put a label on your quilt with any information you
know about your quilt. Talk to family members about family quilts!
